The importance of gut health and ‘trusting your gut’.

On Friday, Jodi Lee Bowel Cancer Ambassador Danni Duncan shared her powerful story at an Adelady event held together with Star Discount Chemist.
The Adelady team shared this on their social media.
“Today was one of the most incredible mornings we’ve had in a long time. Together with 80 amazing women, we opened up the conversation about gut health because we want people to feel healthy, happy, empowered and confident trusting their bodies and their gut instincts.Bowel cancer is something we’re sadly hearing more and more about in younger people, so together with our friends @stardiscountchemist, we wanted to create a safe space to learn, ask questions, debunk myths and have an honest conversation.

Our incredible speaker @danni.duncan_ shared her powerful story after being diagnosed with bowel cancer at just 39 with a 1 year old. Her journey is truly harrowing, but her message is simple and so important: TRUST YOUR GUT and get yourself checked.

We were also joined by Professor Rob Bryant from @hospitalresearch and Chief Pharmacist Shannon Hewitt from Star, who helped break down the facts in a way that left us feeling informed, empowered, and never overwhelmed.

These conversations matter and why we want to do events like this! If it can start a conversation and save one person, then we’ve done our job right!”

Danni shared this message in the lead-up to the event:
“As an ambassador for the Jodi Lee Bowel Cancer Foundation, I’m incredibly passionate about sharing my story and helping people understand just how important it is to listen to their bodies and act early on symptoms. I was just 39, fit and healthy, and never imagined bowel cancer would be part of my story. Diagnosed with Stage 2 Bowel Cancer at just 39, I was fit, healthy and thriving as a busy mum of four, running two businesses and leading an active lifestyle. I started to notice I was struggling to complete my usual runs and gym sets. Weeks later, came the bloating, then the dizziness – until one morning I nearly fainted while making breakfast, and my husband urged me to see a doctor.
If I hadn’t known my body so well and listened to my body when I did, the outcome could have been very different. I didn’t have the more common bowel cancer symptoms like blood in my poo, changes in bowel habits or weight loss. If I wasn’t so in tune with my body, I might have dismissed it as post-partum or perimenopause. By speaking openly, I hope to break down stigma, raise awareness, and empower other women to trust their gut, seek help early, and understand that prioritising their own health is one of the most important things they can do.”
A big thank you to Adelady and Star Discount Chemist for allowing us to be part of this amazing event and to raise important awareness in the community.
