Reaching those who need it most: bowel cancer awareness at Hutt St Centre.

Today we had the opportunity to present at Hutt St Centre, an Adelaide-based not-for-profit organisation that supports people at risk of or experiencing homelessness through providing essential services, care and pathways to rebuild their lives.

We spoke with a room of people who are supported by Hutt St Centre about bowel cancer symptoms, and the importance of early detection and screening.

It was an important conversation, particularly for those facing complex life circumstances where something as simple as recognising symptoms or completing a screening test can be difficult to prioritise and access.

“Bowel cancer is one of the most treatable cancers if found early, but for many people, their circumstances make something as simple as recognising symptoms or completing a screening test far from easy.

Access and awareness are critical. Partnerships like this help ensure that people at risk of or experiencing homelessness are not left behind when it comes to their health.”
– Jodi Lee Bowel Cancer Foundation CEO, Rachel McKay.

Alongside the presentation, we were proud to provide free ColoVantage screening tests – an alternative option that helps remove some of the common barriers to screening for people experiencing homelessness or sleeping rough, and were able to be provided to people not yet eligible for the free screening kits available through the Australian Government, helping ensure more people have the opportunity to screen.

A heartfelt thank you to the Hutt St Centre team for the warm welcome and for the incredible work you do every day supporting people doing it tough.
