John Clements knows firsthand that early detection saves lives.
Diagnosed with Stage 3 bowel cancer shortly after turning 50, John is now 68 and cancer-free.
His diagnosis came thanks to the loving persistence of his mother, Shirley, who had battled bowel cancer herself and urged him to get checked. Her intuition and care ultimately saved his life.
“A colonoscopy revealed a tumour. I had surgery in May 2007, followed by six months of chemotherapy. My mother passed away on the morning of my 11th treatment. I owe her my life,” John shares.
This August and September, John will take on the 800km Portuguese Camino, trekking from Lisbon to Santiago de Compostela to raise awareness and funds for the Jodi Lee Foundation. But this isn’t just a walk – it’s a mission.
John walks in memory of his mother and in tribute to the power of early detection. He’s a passionate advocate, a long-time volunteer with the Jodi Lee Foundation, and a familiar face at The JLF Trek – which he completed for the 16th time in 2025, once again ranking among our top fundraisers. And he’s not slowing down.
“Early detection was a gift. Sharing my story, volunteering with the Jodi Lee Foundation, and taking part in The JLF Treks is how I honour her legacy.”
His Camino is not only a physical challenge but a heartfelt mission to “pay it forward” and highlight the rising impact of bowel cancer, especially among younger Australians.
A quote John loves, and one that captures the spirit of his journey, is from JFK:
“Physical fitness is not only one of the most important keys to a healthy body, it is the basis of dynamic and creative intellectual activity.”
John’s journey is a living example of that – where strength of body meets strength of purpose.
Let’s get behind him. Donate, share, and be part of this incredible journey. Every step John takes is a step toward saving lives.
